GGD is the result of Nolly and Matt’s obsession with drums.
Together they toured the world as members of progressive metal band Periphery, and with Nolly starting to launch his career as a record producer and mixer, they took advantage of their respective talents to work on developing the perfect drum sound for the band.
A meticulous obsession with figuring out the process of dialling in drums to sound as good as they can led Nolly to dive deep into learning how to capture them on record, in all their glory. He started tuning up Matt’s kit every day on tour to try out new techniques, then spent hours, days, weeks, and months researching and experimenting at home with different microphones, drum heads, tunings, and all shapes and sizes of drums to hone a holistic system for recording the best drum sounds possible.
Taking this system into the studio, the guys realized they truly had something special - between the way Matt hit the drums, and the approach Nolly developed to record them, the sound was fresh, clear and natural, but also extremely powerful in the way that their music demands. They knew they wanted to do more than just record albums with this sound though, they wanted to bottle it, turn it into a writing and recording tool that they, their band and any fellow musician could use to create amazing sounding drum tracks from their home studios or even laptops anywhere in the world.
They pitched their plans to established music production companies, but despite all the preparation and promising conversations, there just didn’t seem to be the right fit. It was a disappointing setback, but through this failure the guys became inspired to take on the challenge of developing their product independently, and to create the best sounding virtual drum instrument their abilities would allow.
Scouring the USA and Europe for the ideal studio to record their samples, they ended up choosing an amazing live room in Baltimore where Matt lives. They went through an exhaustive selection process to arrive at their favorite drums and cymbals from Matt’s collection, then hit the studio to make it a reality.
The session was intense and challenging, but it was an incredible learning experience and ultimately the hits recorded during those days became the Matt Halpern Signature drum library.
Determined to ensure they ended up with a virtual instrument that lived up to the efforts they had put into creating the samples, they needed to find someone with the knowledge to make it happen. It turned out that their long time friend and collaborator, Derya Nagle, was just the person they needed, so it was a no-brainer to bring him into the fold.
Next they needed someone who had the experience of using drum sample software day in, day out for years, someone who could put their virtual instrument through the wringer and help them make it as intuitive and user-friendly as possible, and who could be better suited to this role than Misha Mansoor.
With Nolly, Matt, Dez and Misha all working together, they have been able to really bring their collective production ideas to life, and the result is what you see today.
